Many utilities are faced with shrinking budgets and increasing responsibilities.
Automation has been used to minimize increases in facility staff, substituting
capital costs for long term operating costs. While this trend has kept the number
of utility staff lower than might otherwise have been necessary, it has also
required a better trained staff and access to more complex information in support
of this technology. Fortunately, organizations that improve operating efficiency
through automation are usually comfortable using microcomputers for optimizing
information access. Since 1995, information delivered via the Internet has
evolved to become one of the world's primary information delivery mediums.
Intranets, or the use of Internet tools within the private network of an
organization, now make it possible to access information quickly and cheaply.
This paper examines the various types of information that can be accessed via an
Intranet, how this information can assist facility operators, and how it can make
them more productive. Includes figure.
