Tacoma Water, a municipally owned water utility since 1893, serves some 83,000 customers in the City of Tacoma, Washington, and parts of Pierce County and south King County. The City of Tacoma has brought geographic information to every employee's computer. Using an AutoDesk product called MapGuide, employees have easy access, via the City's intranet, to dozens of layers of map information, including utility locations, property lines, streets, easements, other survey record information and orthophoto information. This paper describes Tacoma Water's use of MapGuide and the benefits derived from access to web-based maps.
