This paper compares flow, pressure and water quality predictions from askeletonized model to the results from a highly detailed model of the samesystem. Both models used the same software to model the water distribution systemof Burlington, North Carolina. Both models used data from extensive field tests, and both were calibrated with field measurements. Water quality simulations usedthe same decay coefficients. The skeletonized model had approximately 450 pipesincluding all pipes 12-inches and larger, plus some of the 8-inch pipes. Demandwas distributed to about 130 nodes. The detailed model was built from an AutoCADdrawing that included every pipe in the system. This model had approximately3,500 pipes including 2-inch pipes and intricate connections at intersections. This model distributed demand to approximately 2,100 nodes. The paper comparespredicted fire flows at several locations. Predicted pressures are compared formaximum hour demand, the design condition. Water quality predictions are comparedat several locations, including sampling points where grab sample measurementswere available. The paper discusses each model's advantages and disadvantages andprovides insight into differences in predicted results and the level of effortrequired to build, maintain and interpret results from each type of model. Includes tables, figures.
