There is a lot of buzz about Application Service Providers (ASPs). Manyorganizations are exploring the use of ASPs and attempting to decide how to usethem. ASPs are companies that provide rented or leased applications via theInternet (typically using browser technology). ASPs are very attractive toorganizations for four primary reasons: they address information technology (IT)staffing and retention issues; they dramatically improve implementation speed;they provide significant cost savings; and, they increase IT's value by allowingIT to focus on important business issues instead of fundamental technical issuesBut is the ASP market ready for utilities? And, are utilities ready for ASPs?This paper will provide information about ASPs, and how they apply to water andwastewater utilities. The following topics are addressed: what is an ASP; theadvantages and implications of using an ASP; the applications that utilitiescould/should consider as ASP candidates; and, how the ASP model fits into anoverall utility IT strategy. Additionally, perspectives are provided regardingthe strategic implications of adopting an ASP-based approach, and considerationsfor successful adoption. Includes table, figures.
