The Director and Assistant Director of Utilities at the City of Naperville, IL did not have an
efficient means to monitor their water and wastewater systems. Both the Director and Assistant
Director had offices in the City's Administration building located downtown. However, the
City's operator station, which allowed for monitoring and control of their water and wastewater
system, was located on the opposite side of town at their Springbrook Wastewater Treatment
Plant.
This presented a problem for the City because, both the Director and the Assistant Director of
Utilities needed to monitor their systems, yet could not do so without driving across town to the
Wastewater Treatment Plant. Therefore, the City determined it was necessary to implement certain
technologies, which would allow for a more cost and time efficient means to monitor conditions
at both the Springbrook Wastewater Treatment Plant and the City's water distribution system
and would drastically reduce the amount of time required to distribute real-time operational information to key managers. The City had both
an existing LAN, which was utilized by personnel in all departments, and an existing SCADA
system in place. Includes figures.
