This paper discusses Facility Information Management Systems (FIMS or FIM systems), an example of
web-based technologies used for water and wastewater treatment facilities. FIMS are
an effective tool to manage data and documentation from increasingly complex facilities.
The most sophisticated systems integrate and provide coordinated access to data and
documents from SCADA, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS),
laboratory information management systems (LIMS), engineering record drawings,
operating manuals, training material and purchasing. FIMS can contain a wide variety of information and can be considered an
extension of an online operating manual that can contain any information concerning
the plant, facility or network of facilities. Along with the plant operations manual, control
narratives and standard operating procedures, a FIM system can also include
photographs, training videos, engineering data such as CAD drawings and design
reports, health and safety procedures and MSDS, reference information, such as
process theory and chemical interactions, and even financial data, such as budget and
payroll information. Laboratory information systems (LIMS) and computerized
maintenance management systems (CMMS) can also be tied into a FIMS. There are many technologies available that can be used to develop a FIM system. This paper does not
go into depth about the technology, but will present a brief overview of some of the
technologies. Includes figures.
