This paper discusses new automatic meter reading technology that reads and works in conjunction with
the existing water meters.
MTech-Korea has developed new technology that uses an imaging system to read
existing utility meters, called the Image Reading Utility Telemetering System (IRUTS).
This technology uses a camera to capture images of the utility gauge and transmits these
photographic images to the utility provider through a wireless network or a telephone
line. These images are converted into numeric data by the host server's application
software. This technology is unique in that it reads the meters rather than replacing
them, eliminating the need to reinstall all utility meters, which is required by most new
automatic meter reading systems.
IRUTS is currently being produced and used in several cities in South Korea in pilot
programs. The new technology is designed to more precisely read meters, while
remaining both cost and labor effective. The new technology will improve the
efficiency of the utility meter reading system itself, as well as increase the efficiency of
the administrative management of the system. The administration of utilities will
become more effective and reliable, as the new system is durable and less prone to
encountering problems that would hinder the accuracy of the readings. Includes figures.
