The capital city of the Sarawak State, Kuching City is a region rich in freshwater resources. However rapid urban growth is having a profound impact on the demand for water, its delivery and the physical environment. Currently, supply-side management characterizes the urban water provision in Kuching City. The concept of Water Demand Management (WDM) is not well-established locally but remains an effective investment in sustainable use of water resources. By utilizing the Wallingford Software model, InfoWorks WS (Water Supply) is employed to carry out an in depth study of water demand patterns in the city from an end-use perspective, regarding the possibility of introducing Water Demand Management components. InfoWorks WS provides a common platform to include assessment of urban water issues, and integration of water supply and Water Demand Management planning which is used as a practical tool for policy and institutional change. These efforts will be tied to water conservation programs in adjoining urban areas, making appropriate improvements to meet the unique conditions of Kuching city. Includes 5 references, figures.
