Selecting the best design for new distribution pumping stations is difficult without the aid of mathematical computer models. Several analyses of the Norfolk, Virginia water system were performed to determine pump characteristics at various demand conditions, system head curves, pump combinations, control valve-sizing, and backpressure control settings. The study resulted in a recommendation to construct the East Little Creek Pump Station, incorporating three 26ML/d (7-mgd) constant-speed, horizontal centrifugal pumps, to meet peak system demands and emergency requirements. Includes tables, figures.
