The performance review process can be a positive tool in providing guidance,
establishing a non-threatening working environment, and creating the open
communications necessary to foster continuous improvement and employee satisfaction.
This paper addresses why we do performance evaluations and what we should
gain from them. The paper discusses the status of various appraisal processes in private and
public organizations and offers insight into making a program more effective and less
dreadful. The paper also includes a toolkit of ideas, including forms and
reference materials, which will help attendees improve their appraisal processes and
