Pilot testing of two ultrafiltration (UF) systems using cellulose acetate (CA) and polysulfone (PS) based membranes was conducted at the St. Louis County Water Treatment Plant to evaluate the treatability of softened and recarbonated Missouri River Water. The purpose of the project was to evaluate UF as an alternative to ozone and biological filtration, to address multiple treatment objectives including Cryptosporidium and other disinfectant resistant pathogens, disinfection byproducts (DBP) control, and atrazine removal. In order to meet the last objective, powdered activated carbon (PAC) was used in conjunction with UF. Challenge studies showed superior removal of atrazine in a dynamic mode when used in conjunction with the semibatch membrane operating systems. Other water quality parameters were in accordance with the rejection reported in the literature, in terms of particles, turbidity, and microbial pathogens. The results demonstrate the feasiblity of the integration of UF in lime softening plants. Given the high fluxes obtained, this technology is believed to be competitive with the implementation of ozone for Cryptosporidium inactivation and biological filtration. Includes 13 references, tables, figures.
