Recent epidemiological studies have indicated that the cancer risk posed by arsenic in drinking water may be greater than previously thought. In response, the US Environmental Protection Agency is planning to lower the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic from 50 ug/l to 2-20 ug/l for total arsenic (As(III)+AS(V)). Membrane treatment is a technology theoretically capable of meeting the new MCL. Experiments testing these predictions were performed using a flat sheet membrane tester with nanofiltration and ultrafiltration membranes. Includes 11 references, table, figures.
