This paper describes a new agar-based medium Envirofast 8 and a broth-based medium Colifast-6 which were developed for the detection of coliforms and E.coli from water samples. The media incorporate the substrate 4-methylumbelliferyl B-D-galactopyranoside (Mugal) for the detection of the B-galactosidase enzyme. The Envirofast medium was used in a MF format and the Colifast-6 medium was designed to be used in a Colifast CA-100 fluorescence analyser. Feasibility trials were performed in order to assess the potential of these media to detect indicator organisms within 8 hours.
