The bacterial degradation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) at maximum residence time locations (MRTL), was originally identified or detected by the Newport News Waterworks and has been shown to be common to a number of other utilities. This information has provided baseline data to propose a more in-depth study of this phenomenon which may have far reaching effects on the utilities across the country. This research will provide a means to understand or explain the possible decline in HAAs at MRTLs that may be occurring through the United States at specific times during the year. The development and growth of a biofilm at the MRTL may serve as an indicator or predictor of future changes in HAA levels within the distribution system. In view of the importance that is being placed on controlling the levels of various DBPs and the pending regulations regarding these materials in drinking water, the results of this research may change the regulatory protocol being established by EPA under the Disinfectant/Disinfection By-Products (D/DBP) Rule for HAAs.
