This paper discusses the PureBright point-of-use system that utilizes a pulsed "white" light in the broad spectrum containing wavelengths from 200nm in the ultraviolet to about 1nm in the near infrared with peak emissions between 400 and 500nm. This "pulsed light" is thought to cause damage to an organism's DNA, thereby rendering it non-infectious. The PureBright unit was challenged with Klebsiella terrigena, poliovirus type 1 strain Lsc2ab, simian rotavirus SA11 and Cryptosporidium parvum over 8 days which included two 48 hour stagnation periods. The PureBright unit was able to achieve a >7 log inactivation of Klebsiella, a >4 log inactivation of polio and rotavirus and a >4 log inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum. The PureBright unit was able to meet the inactivation levels for bacteria, virus and protozoa specified in the EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for a microbiological water purifier. Pulsed white light is an important emerging technology for the inactivation of microorganisms from drinking water.
