Based on the results of a previous research program on the numerical modeling of UV reactors, hydraulic deflectors were placed in a full-scale system to improve global disinfection efficiency. The removal of fecal coliforms increased by an average 0.5 log due to these modifications. The performance enhancement increased with increasing flow rate, and translated into a potential system size reduction of 20% at high flow rates. Hydraulic deflectors can be an important component of cost-effective solutions to address challenges such as stringent water reuse regulations. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
