Contrary to wastewater reclamation and reuse in many other countries where
agricultural and landscape irrigation is a dominant application, Japan's water
reuse is decisively directed toward non-potable urban applications such as toilet
flushing, environmental water, instream flow augmentation, and industrial reuse.
The current practices of wastewater reclamation and reuse are surveyed. Lessons
learned from the Japanese water reuse experiences are summarized and presented in
this paper with respect to national policies, water reuse schemes, regulations,
and costs of reclaimed water. Includes 5 references, tables, figure.
