This slide presentation outlines a study on the formation of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts by either chloramination or chlorination. It begins with background information on the advantages and disadvantages of chloramination versus chlorination, outlines the experimental methodology, and gives the results that include: chloramination forms, on average, ten times lower chloroform concentrations, but five times higher DCAN concentrations, compared against free chlorine addition; DCAN and TCNM formations increase as the DOC to DON ratio decreases upon free chlorine addition; colloidal natural organic matter (NOM) isolates, and other nitrogen enriched isolates, exhibited higher NDMA formation compared with hydrophobic acid isolates; NDMA formation increases as the amino-sugar to aromatic ratio of NOM increases; NDMA did not form upon free chlorine addition in NOM isolate solutions; Nitrogen moieties of DOM and monochloramine both play important roles in NDMA formation; chloramination could form higher nitrogenous DBPs in drinking water systems over chlorination; and, DON can serve as a precursor material for nitrogenous DBPs. Includes figures.
