Metropolitan King County is interested in developing opportunities for wastewater reclamation throughout its service area. To facilitate this initiative, a reuse demonstration project was implemented to evaluate, select, and pilot test technologies that will meet the County's goals, including effluent water quality, operability, and cost. Following an in-depth screening process, two treatment trains were selected for testing in a nine-month pilot test. Treatment Train No. 1 included primary treatment (conventional primary clarification, fuzzy filter, and ballasted flocculation), biological aerated filter (BAF), and filtration (fuzzy filter and microfiltration). Treatment Train No. 2 consisted of a membrane bioreactor (MBR). These treatment trains were selected to achieve Class A water quality when combined with disinfection. Potential for advanced treatment was demonstrated through the addition of reverse osmosis and modification of operations to achieve nutrient removal. The initial results based on the first phase of operation indicate that both treatment trains evaluated could successfully meet the Class A water quality requirements. The second phase will evaluate nutrient removal. Includes tables, figures.
