The Southern Nevada Valley, being a golf-haven for the millions of tourists that come to visit each year, is viewed by many as the ideal place to build golf courses and golf course communities. This sentiment is no different in Henderson where currently there are nine golf course communities; seven of which are reliant on reuse water (the Lake Las Vegas resort has two golf courses that are irrigated with (raw) water that comes directly out of Lake Mead). In addition, there remains the strong possibility of ten more courses that could be built within the next ten years. On average, each golf course uses between 1.25 and 1.50 mgd during the peak irrigation months. Considering this and in order to accommodate the needs of all of its reuse customers, the City needs to plan for the provision of up to 30 mgd of reuse water within the next ten years. Quite a substantial change from the earlier years when the City made special concessions in order to attract more reuse customers. As reflected above, the City was quick to realize that the exponential growth in population required a tremendous amount of forward planning. This was also the case for its reuse system. As a result of this fast-growing need, Henderson developed a plan and in October of 1994 the City completed the construction of a 10 million-gallon per day water reclamation facility. With the addition of this facility, the City now had the ability to treat up to 15 million-gallons of wastewater per day. Since the opening of this facility and in order to keep up with the growing population, the City has completed two additional expansions thus bringing the current total available treatment capacity to 24 mgd. As can be seen from Figure 3 below, it will not be long until the increase in wastewater generation exceeds the available treatment capacity of the plant. Due to this, the City is on the verge of constructing the third and largest expansion to its water reclamation facility. Upon completion of this latest expansion, the City will then have the ability to treat a total of 35 million-gallons per day of wastewater. Includes figures.
