Significant advances have occurred in membrane performance and expected membrane life in the past two decades. Additional improvements can be expected based on today's continuing research. As membrane life is extended, the importance of cleaning to maintain membrane performance will continue to increase and the shift from simple generic formulations to specialized cleaners with assured membrane compatibility will continue. Technical support in data evaluation, foulant identification and cleaner selections is available from the manufacturers of these cleaners. This paper covers when to clean membranes, selection of cleaners for various types of fouling (scaling and precipitation, colloidal fouling, organic fouling, and biological fouling), cleaning conditions (flow, pressure, and temperature), and evaluation.
