Ultrafiltration combined with powdered activated carbon adsorption or alum coagulation proved to be effective for removal of organics which serve as precursors for disinfection byproduct formation. Removals of DBP formation potentials were as high as 80 percent. This removal is primarily due to the additives. Permeate turbidity was consistently low regardless of the raw water turbidity. Coliforms appeared to be completely removed, and total heterotroph counts in the permeate water were repeatedly low. Preliminary indications are that PAC and alum may not play an important role in controlling irreversible fouling for the conditions experienced during this study. It is significant to note that addition of such high solids concentrations did not further inhibit the performance of the membrane for the one- to four-day periods over which the system was operating.
