Chlorine dioxide has been shown to be effective in inactivating Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in drinking water. However, relatively high dosages of this disinfectant may be necessary to achieve 99 percent inactivation of the microorganism, especially at low temperatures, possibly requiring the use of additional processes to control disinfection byproducts. Previous studies have shown that the disinfection process can be enhanced by using sequential disinfection schemes using chlorine species after a strong disinfectant like ozone or chlorine dioxide. The objective of this study was to investigate the inactivation kinetics of C. parvum oocysts using sequential disinfection schemes involving chlorine dioxide/free chlorine and chlorine dioxide/monochloramine. A modified in-vitro method described by Rennecker et al., which is consistent with animal infectivity data, was used to assess the viability of treated oocysts. Includes 10 references, figures.
