The objective of this paper is to estimate the apparent hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient for pollutants transported in random intermittent flow through a pipe. Using known results from the Poisson rectangular pulse (PRP) process and dispersion in pipes under steady laminar flow this classic work is extended to reflect the intermittent flow conditions that prevail along dead-end pipes in a municipal water distribution system. Includes 15 references, figures.
