BHC Company (BHC), a subsidiary of Aquarion Company is the public water supply company for more than 500,000 customers in 24 cities and towns in Fairfield, New Haven, and Litchfield Counties of Connecticut. BHC operates six surface water treatment plants including three dissolved air flotation (DAF) plants and two lamella sedimentation plants. The State of Connecticut has, to this date, given BHC only 2 log Giardia removal credit for its DAF plants. Because of this and also the need to collect Cryptosporidium removal data for the IESWTR, the research described in this paper examines Giardia and Cryptosporidium removal data for DAF treatment compared to lamella sedimentation. The objectives of the paper are: to compare performance of lamella sedimentation to DAF; to examine overall performance of clarification by lamella sedimentation or DAF plus dual media filtration; and, to examine seasonal effects of water temperature on performance. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
