This paper presents a method that can be used by a single system or a group of systems to
evaluate disinfection options for compliance with new disinfection byproducts regulations. The following general
steps need to be followed in this type of evaluation using a water treatment plant simulation
model:
obtain up-to-date information on recent developments in disinfection and treatment
technologies, which are specifically applicable to the system being analyzed along with
their unique constraints;
perform a preliminary analysis of the technologies that might be suitable for
implementation by its member agencies; and,
determine one or more alternatives that could be viable based on paper evaluation and
conduct experimental evaluation to narrow the selection.
A generic example is presented in the paper.
