The goal of this study is to demonstrate the impact of dosing schemes with preoxidants (chlorine dioxide and permanganate) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) on MIB and geosmin removal and iron and manganese removal. A bench-scale jar testing apparatus was used to simulate the full-scale conventional treatment process. A modified jar with limited headspace was used in all experiments to minimize the loss of volatile taste and odor organics. Tests were conducted at 20°C ± 1°C with aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3 · 14H2O, alum) as the coagulant, and preliminary tests were performed to select the alum dose needed to meet US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) enhanced coagulation total organic carbon (TOC) removal requirements. Jar tests were run to simulate rapid mix, tapered flocculation and sedimentation. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
