This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection's (NYCDEP) Wellhead Protection Program (WHPP) for its groundwater system. Groundwater protection strategies are presented, along with implementation examples. Lessons learned include: water utility does not have complete control
over protection activities;
cooperation between agencies required and
beneficial to both organizations;
initial implementation has resulted in cost
savings to new treatment plant;
reduced initial capital cost requirements and operation
and maintenance costs; and,
community support for projects. Includes figures.
