As part of the Water Security initiative, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), in partnership
with the City of Cincinnati and the Greater Cincinnati Water Works, deployed an initial pilot
contamination warning system. Consequence management represents the response mechanism of the
contamination warning system, and involves the actions taken to plan for and respond to potential
drinking water contamination incidents to mitigate potential human health and economic impacts.
Developing an effective consequence management plan (CMP) involves self-assessment of a utility's
existing response operations, development of a CMP decision-making framework and identification and
engagement of key response partners and stakeholders. An effective consequence management program
also includes communication planning and regular CMP training and maintenance. Includes 3 references, figures.
