As part of the Water Security initiative, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in partnership
with the City of Cincinnati deployed a drinking water contamination warning system for the Greater
Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW). Significant implementation activities were completed in July 2007.
Additional demonstration pilots will be selected through a competitive, cooperative agreement grant
process. With significant implementation activities completed at the initial pilot and plans for additional demonstration pilots in progress, the focus of the USEPA's efforts is shifting from implementation activities to
evaluation. Evaluation of the operation, performance, and sustainability of the Water Security initiative
pilots is a key aspect of the program to inform guidance development and promote the adoption of the
contamination warning system concept by drinking water utilities throughout the nation. In addition,
evaluation also plays a key role for utilities in the contamination warning system deployment process. Includes 5 references, table, figure.
