This powerpoint presentation begins by providing background information on bacterial regrowth, organic matter, assimilable organic carbon (AOC) and the water
industry. The objective of this study was to develop a rapid, standardized and
convenient test for AOC to accurately determine the regrowth
potential of treated water. The methodology included bioluminescent test organisms and assay. Results presented include: standard curves;
modeling of maximum growth, lability and kinetics; and,
validation in reclaimed/reuse water. Conclusions arrived at included:
the luminescence-based AOC test generates results
faster than previous methods, more efficiently, is cost-effective
and less labor intensive;
the luminescence method gives reliable results for AOC
as acetate carbon equivalents and provides data on the
liability and kinetics of carbon utilization; and,
this method is applicable to freshwater matrices, reuse
water, and drinking water networks. Includes tables, figures.
