Preoxidation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is shown to effect adsorbability of target pollutants in the nanogram-per-liter range. Preoxidation with free chlorine was shown not to effect breakthrough or equilibrium. Potassium permanganate and chlorine dioxide are shown to improve adsorption, but to varying degrees based on water and the probe micropollutant. Further research is needed to understand the effect of oxidation of DOM on micropollutant adsorption for effective process planning and plant operation. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
