Adenovirus has been shown to have a high resistance to low pressure (LP) ultraviolet (UV), and although not reported in any drinking water outbreaks, it has been chosen to define the UV dose requirements for virus credit in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency LT2 ESWTR. Recently, Linden and co-authors reported that Adenovirus can be inactivated with lower UV doses when using medium-pressure (MP) polychromatic lamps. Working with Adenovirus Type 2, the authors verified the decreased UV-resistance of Adenovirus to MP light sources compared to LP light sources using MP and LP collimated beams (CB). The authors hypothesized that some of these polychromatic "benefits" (from MP lamps) would be "lost" in actual UV reactors, due to the filtering of short wavelengths by water and absorbing compounds. The authors tested this by challenging LP and MP UV reactors, with both Adenovirus Type-2 and MS2 bacteriophage. MS2 had the same response to LP and MP UV, and thus acts as an internal control. The authors demonstrated that some of the polychromatic "benefits" were lost in real polychromatic reactors. Includes figures.
