Preface
Essential tremor is estimated to affect up to 10 million Americans and is one of the most common movement disorders. Although there are multiple types of tremor, essential tremor is the most prevalent. There have been tremendous strides made in the treatment of tremor. In the last few years, clinical trials of the anti-epileptic medication topiramate have shown benefit in essential tremor. Many studies and clinical data have confirmed the safety and efficacy of surgical treatments such as thalamotomy and deep brain stimulation of the thalamus in the treatment medication resistant disabling tremor. However, the management of tremor disorders continues to be a challenge.
The Handbook of Essential Tremor and Other Tremor Disorders presents up to date information on the scientific and therapeutic aspects of essential tremor and other tremor disorders in a practical, user-friendly format for easy access for the clinician and academic alike. The book is organized into two primary sections, with the first section specific to essential tremor and the second to the various other tremor disorders. The section on essential tremor contains a comprehensive picture of the disorder including history, epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, neurochemistry, neuropathology, clinical characteristics and assessments, and medical and surgical treatment. The second section is dedicated to specific tremor disorders including parkinsonian, dystonic, cerebellar, drug and toxin induced, physiologic, psychogenic and others. Each chapter is a complete review of the particular tremor disorder and its treatment.
We are cognizant of the need for and believe that this book will serve as a valuable resource for neurologists as well as general practitioners, family physicians, and other health care professionals dealing with essential tremor and other tremor disorders. It is a handbook that should thoroughly guide the clinician toward treating the many patients who are afflicted with these often debilitating disorders.
We would like to thank each of the authors for their time and commitment in preparing scholarly reviews of the various aspects of essential tremor and other tremor disorders. We would also like to thank Jinnie Kim other Marcel Dekker, Inc., staff who assisted in the preparation of this book.
