Introduction

Note: Nothing in this standard supercedes applicable laws and regulations.

Note: In the event of a conflict between the English and the domestic language, the English language shall take precedence.

Purpose. Identification of critical thermal conditions and thereby affected components due to vehicle related heating up of the steering system by temperature measurements. Performance check of the steering system at steering component high temperature conditions (HPS, EHPS,and EPS).

Especially for EHPS and EPS this heating up is a mandatory functional test for software tuning for high-temperature functionality and heat protection.

The objective is to record the actual state and, if necessary, the development of suitable thermal protection measures.

Foreword. During vehicle cornering the power steering assist system also creates heat due to thermal loss. The generated quantity of heat of a conventional HPS with an engine driven power-steering pump is very high under cornering with high rev's. But EHPS and EPS will be heated up, too by steering work under these driving conditions. If the heat is not dissipated from the steering system, damage of steering components and/or malfunction respectively reduced performance of the steering system might occur.

Damage may also occur to parts which are directly irradiated due to their location in the vicinity of the exhaust or of other heated parts.

Conditions become especially critical if, in addition, engine compartment temperatures are high, which impairs or renders impossible heat dissipation from the components which are installed there.

For this reason, two easily reproducible tests shall be performed on bendymountain roads (with and without trailer). The tests shall closely simulate the following customer relevant driving situations:
