This specification covers the requirements of protective back coating system used to seal and protect vacuum deposited metallic coatings and GM261M decorative coatings (paint, or hot stamped foils) applied to the second surface of acrylic ornamentation used on the vehicle exterior. Type I (monocoat) and Type II (two coat) back coat systems are no longer acceptable for use. Type III (three coats or equivalent minimum dry film build) systems are the only approved back coats that can provide the level of protection from aggressive cleaning/protectant materials as might be encountered during normal customer use.
