This specification defines the adhesion requirements of exterior trim that is attached to painted or non-painted substrates. These requirements also include weatherstrips and seals that are tape attached. The adhesive system is typically a double-coated foam, or elastomeric tape.
This specification covers the laboratory test requirements for GM Approved Adhesive Applications (AAA), PPAP approval, processing conditions and routine quality control.
In addition to the tape/substrate combinations, approvals are also specific to the facility that laminates the tape to the part.
This specification applies only to substrates, paint, adhesion promoters, and tape materials that have been qualified and approved to the appropriate GM specifications.
Double-coated foam, or elastomeric tapes shall meet the requirements of GM3802M for the appropriate tape type.
Emblem and nameplate adhesion using either a double-coated foam tape, or an adhesive transfer film is covered in GM6271M.
Decal adhesion is covered in GM6073M. 1.6 The adhesion requirements of exterior trim using a non-pressure sensitive adhesive are covered in GM3601M.
Overall part performance for exterior trim and decorative insert systems can be found in GM3632M. Test on production intent substrates (painted (white), plastic, metal, glass, film, or elastomer).
The requirements of this standard shall be met over all production intent paint systems, or mold-in-color plastics.
