This standard describes the requirements for fiber-based thermal and/or acoustical shields attached via pressure-sensitive adhesive to the exterior of the vehicle.

Material Description. This material shall be comprised of a needlepunched nonwoven material permanently bonded to an aluminum foil and a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The material shall come with a removable liner system to protect the pressure-sensitive adhesive until time of application. The needlepunched nonwoven material shall be comprised of polyester, polyester/fiberglass fibers carbonized fibers or carbonized fibers and polyester. This material composite shall be suitable for use in exterior vehicle environments.

Material Identification. There are four types of thermal/acoustical parts and are different in their fiber makeup. The thickness of the foils used for individual parts shall be called out on the engineering drawings.

Types of Thermal Insulation

Type I – Polyester fibers

Type II – Polyester fiberglass blend

Type III – Carbonized fibers

Type IV – Carbonized fibers polyester blend

Typical Application. This material is intended to reduce protected component temperatures and interior noise levels. The material acts both as a thermal radiation and conduction barrier. It also provides acoustic absorption, transmission loss, and damping characteristics. The material can be attached to a variety of protected components such as floorpans, plastic components, frame rails, intake pipes, etc. via the pressure - sensitive adhesive.

Limitations on Usage. The materials described in this specification are designed for use in applications where the composite will not exceed temperatures of 204 °C (400 °F).
