ABSTRACT \

Properties of surfaces and interfaces play a central role in solid-state electrochemistry. This contribution discusses the application of surface analytical techniques to surfaces and interfaces of oxide ion conducting materials with regard to their electrochemical properties and applications. Emphasis lies on results of photoelectron spectroscopies which proved to be particularly useful. Topics are

  • composition, bonding, and electronic properties of solid electrolyte surfaces,
  • relation between changes of electrode potential and surface composition, surface band structure, work function, Fermi level at electrode surfaces and interfaces,
  • in-situ studies for the detection of adsorbed particles and intermediates of electrode reactions to elucidate the reaction mechanisms.

Most of the presented results concern surfaces and interfaces of yttria stabilised Zr02 (YSZ) and electrode materials such as Pt and Ag.
