Introduction
This book forms the proceedings of the Novel ChemistrylProcessing Symposium that formed part of the ECerS (European Ceramic Society) 1999 conference held at the Brighton Conference Centre, UK, over the period 20-24 June 1999. The Symposium consisted of twenty-eight oral papers, spread across six sessions, plus a further forty-eight papers in the poster session. The technical content of the Symposium was very broad, covering subjects as diverse as novel methods for preparing nanoceramics, the processing of electroceramics, colloidal techniques, novel moulding and shaping routes and the use of additives in ceramic processing. Out of all of these papers, eighteen have been captured to be published in this special volume. They range from novel routes to the preparation of a range of different ceramic powders, to the behaviour of ceramic powders in colloidal suspensions, and the consequences of different green forming routes on the properties of the bodies produced. In line with the international nature of the conference itself, the authors of the papers represent no less than 12 different countries. This book should be of interest to both processors and end-users of ceramics from both the engineering ceramic and electroceramic disciplines and is a good example of the current 'state-of-the-art' and articulates clearly future ambitions in these fields.
