This Defence Standard (NES) in conjunction with the documents referred to herein stipulates the arrangements, design parameters, policy, protection, manufacture and testing for heated and unheated ship bridge windows, wipers, portlights, viewing ports and glass screens to be fitted in HM Surface Ships, and specifies the following:

Range of sizes of ships bridge window panels;

Requirements for their manufacture, examination and testing.

The two tables within Annex D list the range of windows for both new and existing windows.

Table D.1 defines the standard range of items from which selection shall be made, for incorporation in all future design of ships and marine craft and to facilitate the replacement of ship's window panels due to damage at sea anywhere throughout the world.

Table D.2 defines the the items to be retained to maintain existing equipments where Table D.1 items are unsuitable.

Users of this NES should note that some ship windows are subject to patent rights in both the United Kingdom and other countries.

This NES contains all necessary information for ship's bridge window panels and wipers, and it is the definitive specification for these items. It must be invoked for all Ministry of Defence (MOD) tender and contract purposes.
