Packaging is the generic name given to the operations involved in the preparation and protection (both physical and environmental) of materiel during handling, transportation, storage and delivery to the user in a serviceable condition. It includes the preservation and identification of the materiel.
General information on the packaging of Service materiel is given in DEF STAN 81-41.
The purpose of this NES is to amplify the above publication with respect to the special requirements of Naval Items and to detail the responsibilities of the Ministry Authorities concerned. It is not intended as an authorative document on packaging design and it does not cover the packaging of:
a. Food and Clothing.
b. Ammunition and Pyrotechnics (see DEF STAN 08-8/Issue 1 (Interim), BR 8541 and RN Form S3140 when issued).
c. Guided Weapons Equipment (see DEF STAN 08-5).
d. Dangerous Supplies and Materials.
e. Nuclear Plant Items (see DGS/PS/5104).
In the context of this NES the term 'Item' is to be interpreted as meaning equipment, assembly, sub-assembly or component.
