This NES specifies the action to be taken to avoid deterioration of propeller shaft bearing surfaces whilst the ship is laid up for long periods.
This involves the complete exclusion of sea water or other contaminating agent from the bearing surface with a suitable sealing arrangement, so designed as to allow rupture of the film on first turning of the shafts and allowing normal lubrication to come into effect immediately.
