This Standard specifies the requirements for, and provides guidance for, the deposition of wear resistant coatings by thermal spray techniques. These coatings are applicable to OEM and for repair / rebuild purposes. Attention is also given to the frequent use of wear resistant coatings in corrosive environments. Other applications of thermal sprayed coatings are not addressed (see Def Stan 02-828 for a general review of thermal spraying). The standard focuses on the High Velocity Oxy Fuel (HVOF) process which can yield high quality deposits comprising metals or cermets but mention is made of Plasma Sprayed coatings in the context of deposition on component areas that are inaccessible to HVOF guns.
