Structure of the PDI Defence Standard series

The scope of this DEFSTAN covers the preparation, exchange, and in-service management of product definition information delivered as part of a MOD contract. Each Part of this Standard has a distinct scope, as defined below.

DEFSTAN 05-10 Part 1: Hardcopy Product Definition Information

Part 1 introduces the concept of Product Definition Information, including an explanation of the intent for the standard and the terminology used to express general requirements. This part also describes the preparation, exchange, and in-service management of PDI, delivered as hardcopy documentation or microform during the course of contemporary projects, shall be subject to the requirements of this part of this DEFSTAN. The in-service management of legacy hardcopy and microform product definition and representation data is also covered.

DEFSTAN 05-10 Part 2: Digital Product Definition Information

Part 2 describes the requirements for the preparation, exchange, and in-service management of digital PDI. This includes 2D and 3D CAD data, digital image data and supporting digital documentation.

Product Definition Information Guidance on the KiD

PDI on the KiD describes best practice for the implementation of Parts 1 and 2 of this Standard in a contract. The Guidance Document is intended for use both internally by the MOD and externally by its contractual partners.

General Concepts of Product Definition Information Definition

The term PDI is a composite of previously used terms and descriptives. It provides the technical basis for product verification activities, (including audits), and for change actions taken during all phases of the product life cycle. Other standards retain the old terms as alias (synonymous) or equivalent (conceptually similar).

EXAMPLE 1 engineering drawings; design information; interface control document/specification; systems requirement document; software product specification; parts list; etc are part of PDI.

EXAMPLE 2 a product structure is a common technique for organizing the composition of a product. It is a representation of the breakdown hierarchy (ie product tree, pyramid, indentured listing, the relationship and quantity of parts that make up the product, etc.) of a complex product, from the top down to the lowest level. Each level references associated product definition information (eg, engineering drawings, parts lists, specifications, software requirements and design documents, and processes and procedures). The product structure shows the top-down relationships among the various parts that make up the product. To effect a change to a product, the first step is the revision of the Product Definition Information defining the product. Affected Product Definition Information may include specifications, drawings, diagrams, sketches, parts lists, master configuration lists, computer program documentation, and test and evaluation procedures. Requirements for changes to the product definition information may vary depending on the life-cycle phase, type and complexity of the product

Long Term Retention and Archiving

The chosen deliverable solution of PDI shall be capable of being retained and readable in its delivered format for the envisaged duration of the product in service and its subsequent disposal. Any statutory requirements for the long-term archiving of data beyond the out of service dates must be considered when selecting the format of the PDI.

Note. Disposal includes the transfer of the product to a 3rd party.
