Purpose
The purpose of this Standard is to specify the rules to be followed in constructing messages for exchange of data on any RN platform. These rules are identical to those specified for the T45 DTS and therefore the T45 DTS MCS [9] could be replaced by this platform-independent standard.
Applicability
This Standard is sponsored by Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), Ministry of Defence (MOD). It comprises:
- Section 2 of this document defines the constituent parts of a message;
- Section 3 defines the types of Data Structure that may be used in the body of a message;
- Section 4 sets out the types of Data Element and special purpose parameters that are provided for;
- Section 5 addresses the way in which bytes are organised in the message string;
- Section 6 sets out the rules to be used when inserting padding bytes in order to comply with the requirements for alignment;
- Annex A sets out the syntax of the formal message construction language;
- Annex B gives examples of a variety of different structures and messages;
- Annex C contains the pre-defined structures from Section 4;
- Annex D details the construction and handling of Hybrid Messages;
- The remainder of this section discusses the activities that are involved in the message construction process.
Any user of this Def Stan, either within MOD or in industry, may propose an amendment to it. Proposals for amendments that are not directly applicable to a particular contract are to be made to UK Defence Standardization (DStan) and those directly applicable to a particular contract are to be dealt with using contract procedures.
If it is found to be unsuitable for any particular requirement MOD is to be informed in writing of the circumstances.
No alteration is to be made to this Def Stan except by issue of an authorized amendment.
Unless otherwise stated, reference in this Def Stan to approval, approved, authorized, and similar terms, means by the MOD in writing.
Any significant amendments that may be made to this Def Stan at a later date will be indicated by a vertical sideline. Deletions will be indicated by 000 appearing at the end of the line interval.
