This Part of the Defence Standard is applicable to all electrotechnical equipment and installations (to be installed in Surface Ships and Submarines).

This Standard is only intended to provide guidance on the electromagnetic compatibility of equipment and systems and their installation, and other aspects including safety, reliability and maintainability must be taken into account when applying the recommended measures.

EMC test methods and limits are covered in Def Stan 59-41 (Part 3) .

The measures recommended for achieving EMC will also assist in providing Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse (NEMP) Hardening, and this aspect is discussed briefly in clause 12.

Severe EMC problems are likely to arise in non-metallic ships, (eg glass reinforced plastic) requiring special techniques to be adopted.

Certain classes of submarine have adopted specific cabling rules to which reference is to be made by designers.
