British Defence Standards
This Defence Standard specifies single core, PVC insulated, non-sheathed cables for Ministry of Defence use in the following applications:
The wiring of switch, control, metering, relay, and instrument panels of power switchgear.
For internal connections in rectifier equipment and in motor starters and controllers.
Table 1 and Table 2 list the standard range of cables from which selection shall be made for new requirements for the uses enumerated in sub-clause 1.1.
This Standard does not include a populated table (Table 3) to list items "permitted only for maintenance" because Table 1 items may be used for this purpose.
Table 4 'Items no longer to be provisioned' includes the items listed in the previous issue of this Standard and indicates, where possible the Table 1 items of this issue which may be used instead.
The cables listed in Tables Table 1 and Table 2 shall be manufactured to the relevant requirements of BS 6231. They are suitable for installation at a minimum ambient temperature of 0°C but once installed they are suitable for use at a minimum ambient temperature of -20°C and in conditions where the combination of ambient temperature and temperature rise due to load results in a conductor temperature not exceeding BK 70°C and CK 90°C.
The cables listed in Table 1 and Table 2 are intended for use at nominal voltages not exceeding 600 V ac and 1000V dc to earth and are suitable for wiring circuits for which the prescribed alternating test voltage, when installed in the equipment, does not exceed 4 kV for 1 min.
This Standard is to be invoked in all tenders and contracts, for the items in Table 1 and Table 2. Any items supplied must be wholly in conformity with its requirements. For codification purposes, this Standard is to be listed among the reference data for all items in Table 1 and Table 2.
This Standard has been agreed by all authorities concerned who are to implement it from its date of issue.
If this Standard should be found unsuitable for a particular requirement, the Director of Standardization shall be informed of the circumstances. Any enquiries regarding this Standard in relation to an invitation to tender or a contract in which it is invoked should be addressed to the Quality Assurance Authority named in that invitation to tender or contract.
