British Defence Standards
This Defence Standard specifies the requirements for Cables and Wires Electrical for Radio Frequency Including Limited Fire Hazard (LFH) Variants for use in equipment used by the MOD.
This part of the Standard lists by type (Table 1 to Table 4) cables to be used by the Ministry of Defence for new requirements and replacement purposes.
The requirements and tests for limited fire hazard sheathing material for cables radio frequency are specified in Defence Standard 61-12 (Part 31).
Cable sheaths manufactured to Defence Standard 61-12 (Part 31) present limited levels of noxious fumes, smoke and corrosive products when assessed by the methods of test specified therein.
Cables in Table 1 Groups 1 to 6 inclusive where those metric cables formerly specified in BS 2316.
Cables in Table 1 Groups 7 to 11 inclusive are low fire hazard variants which are suitable for use within the temperature range - 30°C to + 85°C. The upper temperature limit refers to the combination of ambient temperature and the temperature rise due to the continuous current flow in the cable conductors. In practice it can be assumed that the cables will be operating at their normal conductor temperature of 85°C for one third of their installed life, (i.e. an allotted life of 15 years) with short excursions to 105°C.
