British Defence Standards
This Defence Standard specifies the requirements for six grades of shellac lacquers of differing non-volatile contents. The lacquers are used in the manufacture of ammunition components, typical uses of the lacquers are as follows:
Lacquer shellac 40%: as an air drying alternative to copal varnish complying with DEF STAN 80-176 for steel internal surfaces in contact with high explosive and as an external coating on rolled paper tubes for pyrotechnics.
Lacquer shellac 30%: as a coating for a. paper exploder tubes which will not come into contact with molten explosive and b. internal surfaces of certain wooden ammunition packages.
Lacquer shellac 20%: coating copper and brass components and filled detonators for fuses and gains.
Lacquer shellac 14.5%: coating filled percussion caps for cartridge primers by pin drop method.
Lacquer shellac 11%: coating brass components, the lacquer is normally tinted orange for this purpose.
Lacquer shellac 6%: as an interim protective coating during fabrication of sheet steel, where it will not hamper further welding operations, leaves little debris and will accept subsequent coats of copal varnish complying with DEF STAN 80-1 76.
The designation Type QX'indicates that the material is suitable for certain applications where a high degree of compatibility with explosives is a requirement. However, compatibility with all explosives in all environments has not been established and users should seek advice on particular applications through the responsible Technical and Supervising Authority named in the tender, contract or order. Attention is drawn to the requirements of Def Stan 13-102.
